Daddy got a better job so paige and her family moved from the little house in the clearing that was surrounded by thick scary woods to a house up town that had neighbors. Paige especially loved Mr. and Mrs. Bailey who owned a spot at the down town farmers market. They were always so happy to see her when she came to visit, and always took time to offer her a piece of fruit from their scrumptious fruit bowl that sat on the stair stoop as you walked in the door.
On the other side of the house was a concrete slap where a building once stood. Sometimes paige and her cousins would play on that slab; either hop scotch, jacks, or just get out of the grass. One day when paige was 6, she was playing jacks with her older cousins, and they told her something that seered her soul for life so that she is still resentfully angry at all the fear caused to her and countless other children who have had to endure such horrible and scary stories.
Paige idolized Jimmy Joe and Cindy her older cousins by 2 or 3 years and she still believed every word that they said. As the children were playing jacks, Cindy looked up and said "your Momma and Daddy are going to hell because they smoke and cuss". As paige stared at her a hard knot formed in her throat and went down into her stomach. "Armageddon will come, and the whole world will blow up. God will judge people, and sinners go to hell" she further informed paige.
Later, paige asked her momma "Momma, are you and Daddy really going to hell when armageddon comes".
"What makes you say that?" she replied.
Paige answered her that Cindy and Jimmy Joe told her. She soothed the terrified little girl and tussled her blonde curls, and told her that they wouldn't because they were saved by Jesus. So paige asked her if armageddon will really happen, and she affirmed it with a sadly sweet smile. She said "don't worry about because it probably won't happen while you're alive".
She thought about, alright, when she was laying in bed at night trying to go to sleep. At least the scary men did not come into her room so much at night at this house, but this is when the dreams of armageddon began.
Although paige was only 6 the dream stuck in her head to never leave. Orange and red fire was burning all around just like the preacher boomed about hell fire and brimstone. There was a small mountain in the middle of the lake of fire with tormented souls who had to suffer for eternity. On that mountain was paige and her little brother Patrick , and Paul, her Momma, and the cousins and their Mommas. The Momma's were crying and the children asked them what is wrong. Aunt Wanda looked at the kids and said "we have to kill Y'all because armageddon is coming. It will be too bad and we don't want for Y'all to go through it. When are finished killing Y'all we will kill ourselves so Y'all don't have to see it." Although the other dreams of armageddon weren't as intense, this one plagued the child's mind at sleep time many years to come. Just to be on the safe side, paige did start swiping cigarettes to smoke, as well as cussing because she wanted to be with her Momma and Daddy when they went to hell.
